Mary K. Barnhart, M.D
Mary K. Barnhart, M.D. is a person of many interests who has always believed that all of our life experiences blend together to guide us in our future pursuits. Her long-time interest in nutrition and health resulted in her becoming a Registered Dietitian. She later transitioned into the medical field with plans to practice Preventive Medicine, graduating from the School of Medicine at Loma Linda University in California. During her internship in Family Practice in Orlando, Florida, she developed an appreciation for the role of surgery in making dramatic improvements in a patient’s health. While training to become a general surgeon, she developed an interest in breast cancer and pursued a fellowship in Breast Disease and Breast Surgery in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Her training in surgery culminated in her beginning her professional career as a general surgeon in Portland, Oregon. As she worked as a surgeon, she soon became aware of her special niche ... caring for patients with breast cancer and breast diseases. She has been exclusively involved in working with these patients since 1990. She is joined by her husband, Michael Skinner, in her surgical practice at Rose City Breast Care in Portland, where they “team-practice” in caring for their patients.
In 2001 this husband and wife team founded Hearts of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation in response to seeing a great need for breast cancer patients to have access to a more holistic approach to their care. Hearts of Hope promotes an integrative program of care that combines traditional and proven alternative medical therapy, with treatment being directed toward all aspects of health, including diet, exercise, lifestyle, and spiritual and psychological well being, designed to empower each patient to become a dynamic partner in their own treatment.
